Silk, mink, and synthetic lash extensions are made from a synthetic plastic fiber called polybutylene terephthalate (PBT). The marketing names "silk" and "mink" describe the lash's taper, finish, and feel, which are achieved through processing the PBT material, not from using actual silk or mink fur.
Material: All three types are made from the plastic PBT.
-
- "Silk" lashes: These have a shorter taper, a thicker body, and a more glossy finish. The name is used to market a softer, shinier, and more natural-looking synthetic lash.
- "Mink" lashes: These often have a longer, thinner taper and a matte or satin finish, making them lighter and more natural-looking, though the term "faux mink" is also used for high-quality PBT lashes that mimic the appearance of real mink.
- "Synthetic" lashes: This is the most general term, and it can refer to lashes made from PBT with a wide variety of finishes, curls, and thicknesses.
